Key Attractions on the Fort

Sapta Tirta Pushkarini: A small lake with seven sacred water kunds located on the east side of the Harishchandra Temple which is known as Sapta Tirta Pushkarini.

Kedareshwar Cave: Towards the right of Harishchandreshwar temple, there is the huge cave of Kedareshwar, in which there is a big Shiva Linga, which is completely surrounded by water. There are sculptures carved out in the cave.

Konkan Kada (Konkan Cliff): This Kokancliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan. It provides views of the surrounding region. The cliff has an overhang, but has been climbed many times.

Taramati Peak: Taramati Peak is the highest point on Harishchandragad fort (1429 meters). From Taramati Peak we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad. From this Taramati point, we can have a glimpse of forts till Siddhagad near Bhimashankar in the south.

Temple of Harishchandreshwar: This Lord Shiva temple is marvelous example of the fine art of carving sculptures out of stones that prevailed in ancient India. It is about 16 m high from its base. Around this temple there a few caves & ancient water tanks.

Harichandragad History and Culture

Like the fort itself, Harishchandra’s history is rich and ancient. Previously held under the control of the Mahadev Koli tribes who used the region as a base for resistance, it eventually became a Maratha stronghold. The Marathas captured the fort in 1747 and made Krishnaji Shinde its caretaker. The British got control of the fort in 1818 which marked the end of its military importance. The fort’s historical importance is highlighted in ancient Puranas, which describe it as a sacred site. Over the years, several cultures have left their mark on the fort in the form of caves, temples, and sculptures that showcase 6th century Kalachuri dynasty up to 11th century cave carvings. This diverse mosaic makes it an Indian living museum of its heritage.
